Heart Thoughts

We hear very much, but know very little about spiritual warfare.  Much of it, as author Rick Renner says, seems to be like “Christian voodoo,” with all kinds of formula’s and even rituals to use against the enemy.  Many exhort us to come against the “high places.” of the enemy, but Renner says, “The high place we need to be concerned about is the space between our ears.”  I think he’s right.  That’s where the real spiritual warfare is waged, and it’s there that the battle will either be won or lost.

In Ephesians 6:10-18, Paul exhorts us to “Put on the whole armor of God.”  Many of us may be familiar with that passage but totally ignorant about what is being said there.  I think one of the reasons for that is we neglect to study the culture and setting of what has been said and written.  Paul is talking about ancient weaponry, and if we have no understanding of such weaponry, the impact of what he tells us is greatly reduced, as is it’s power to give us victory.  For instance, is verse 16 he says, “In every battle you will need faith as your shield to stop the fiery darts aimed at you by satan.”  The darts Paul speaks of were quite small, and did not appear overly threatening as they came towards the soldier.  However, they were designed to explode in flames upon impact, and could be deadly to an unprotected soldier.  This is why his shield held such great importance to his safety.  It’s no different for us in the spiritual realm.  Much of what the devil throws at us appears fairly insignificant in its approach.  A word, or words spoken to us.  A thought, a memory, a temptation…..a lie.  Then they hit our brain, and explode in deadly fire, seeking to spread throughout our spirit.  It’s fire that can kill, if we lack the faith, the shield to ward it off.

Hebrews 2:3 says, “How shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation?” It would seem that far too many have reduced this great salvation to a small, powerless one.   How can that happen?  It happens in our minds, in our thinking, in what we believe.  Yet, that very salvation is meant by the Father to be our unbeatable defense.  The 17th verse of Ephesians 6 says, “Put on salvation as your helmet….”  A soldier’s helmet protected his head….and his brain, the place where his thoughts, beliefs, and so on dwell.  The best equipped soldier will not stand if he goes into battle already believing himself defeated.  Indeed he’s already defeated.  It’s the same with far too many of us.  Is it so with you?

Today, everyday, will be for each of us will be a spiritual battle.  In His saving grace, the Father has given us all we need for victory, to overcome every attack by the devil.  He has given you a great salvation.  Are you neglecting it?  Instead of overcoming, are you being overrun?  Are the fiery darts exploding upon you, seeping into your mind, and your heart?  The battle is the Lord’s but He calls us into it alongside Him.  In Christ, we are, as Renner says, “dressed to kill.”  We have been given a great and mightly salavation.  Let’s walk in it, with Him, dressed to kill.

Heart Thoughts

I think the hardest aspect of being a pastor is watching people continue onward to sure destruction, knowing all the time that it needn’t be that way, that in fact, they could instead be moving steadily onward into abundance and wholeness.  The pain this causes is best seen in Matthew 23:37, where Jesus, looking upon Jerusalem, cries from the depths of His heart, “How often I have wanted to gather your children together as a hen protects her chicks beneath her wings, but you wouldn’t let Me.”  They wouldn’t let Him.  Many still won’t let Him.  Maybe, in some way, you won’t let Him.  Why?

Why do we resist so mightily that which is so obviously for our good?  Why do we run from Him, avoid Him, deny Him?  Is it fear?  If so, fear of what?  Losing control?  Having to face some stark realities about ourselves, or our situations?  I think that’s a part of it.  I think it’s also a fear of the unknown.  The known, miserable as it may be, can be very comforting to us.  At least we know what to expect there.  We know the “rules.”  The unknown, well, it’s just that.  Unknown.  The unknown can’t be controlled or managed, so why go there?  Still, it’s into the unknown that Christ calls us, and our choice is to either listen to Him, and follow, or….run.  Hide.  Avoid.  Deny.  We won’t let Him.

I heard a writer named David Terry say recently that “Our journey with Him is a process that we need to agree with.”  Agree with, and yield to.  Surrender to.  Leave in His hands, and leave out of ours.  So few of us seem able to do this.  We give lip service to His Lordship, but in fact, we are very reluctant to agree to the process of the journey He seeks to take us on.  We want details.  Where we’ll be stopping?  How long?  What are the dangers?  What will be our comfort level, and how much sacrifice will be required?  If His answers are satisfactory, then we’ll “agree” to it.  The trouble is, He rarely, if ever, gives such answers, and since we fear going forward without them, we run, hide, avoid, and deny, and, we continue onward on our sure path of, at best, mediocrity, and at worst, disaster.

Throughout my ministry, I have watched life after life, household after household, continue onward on such a path.  I am watching lives and households do so as I write.  I long to see them run to the protection and power of Christ, but instead, they run away.  The Jesus who offers abundant life, that is, an abundance of life, stands before them with arms wide open, and a total willingness to give that life, but they won’t let Him.  He heart breaks.  My heart breaks.  Why?  In the end, I’m still left with that question.  I don’t have the answer to it, yet I do have an answer, the answer.  It is, and always will be, Jesus.  Despite it all, He continues to invite them, invite us, into His abundance of life.  I’ll grieve along with Him for those who won’t receive it, but I’ll keep reaching, as He keeps reaching, knowing that many will agree to that message, will agree to walk with Him in His process.  He has come to give an abundance of life, and it’s my heart to see all who will, enter into it.  Enter into it, and enter into Him.  Jesus, with His arms, and heart, wide open.

Heart Thoughts

Matthew 12:20-21, speaking of Christ, says, “He will not crush those who are weak, or quench the smallest hope….And His name will be the hope of all the world.”  The hope of all the world.  That’s a truly grand and wondrous thought.  I don’t think any of us would disagree with it.  The question that came to my heart was this…..Is He the hope of my world?  Is He the hope of yours?

The world can be, is, a very frightening place, fraught with great danger and challenges, and totally unpredictable.  In fact, the one thing we can be sure of is that there will be trouble.  Lots of it.  Hope can be in short supply, especially if it’s placed in anyone or anything other than Him.  His Word calls us to perservere, to keep pushing onward in and with Him, but how can we do that when all hope seems lost?  He may not crush the smallest hope, but the world makes no such promise.  It specializes in stealing our hopes and dreams.  Where is Jesus when that happens?  Can He remain my hope, our hope, when all our dreams and hopes lie broken and shattered at our feet?  Dreams and hopes for ourselves, our marriages, our children, our ministries.  If He’s the hope of all the world, where is He in my world?  The answer, though we may find it next to impossible to believe, is that He’s right there with us, in the midst of all the brokenness, and He wants us to understand that while one dream may be crushed, and our hopes dashed, He stands ready to give us a new dream, and fresh hope, new hope.  Hope for the rest of the journey.  Hope that will go the distance.

Writer Mark Buchanan says that, “There’s only one road home and to get there, you’ll have to stay the course…..Do we believe that though the entire route teems with danger and death, this is still the only road home?  If so, stay the course.”  The simple, but frightening truth is that Jesus never promised that every dream would be fulfilled, and every hope realized.  What He did promise was to get us “home.”  The beautiful truth is that out of the ashes of unrealized “lesser” dreams, He gives us a greater one, and this one He will fulfill.  Our greatest dreams and hopes for ourselves and for those we love, pale in comparison with what He desires for them, and for us.  Along the way will be danger, disappointment, and even destruction, but He will get us home, and to the complete fulfillment of His best desires for us.  That’s the result of His really being the “hope of OUR world.”  Is He such a hope to you today?  You may be standing in the midst of a shattered dream or hope, but He is there, and as He wipes away your tears, and brings comfort to your heart, He also holds a new, better dream for you and yours.  Embrace that dream, His dream.  The God of all hope, the hope of your world.

Blessings,
